On June 6, 2009, Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University held Academic
Talk Program “Confucius and Sakyamuni Buddha”. Professor Sun
Yong from the Academy of Social Science in Tibetan, China was invited
to present a lecture on “Confucius and Sakyamuni Buddha”.
Professors from Tribhuvan University, Faculties and students from Confucius
Institute, School of Management, School of Art, School of Education and
Buddhist Studies at Kathmandu University presented in the program.
Prof. Sun Yong gave a clear picture about the two ancient culture and
education giants, Confucius born in China and Sakyamuni Buddha born in
Nepal, share much in common although they are respectively the founder
of Confucianism and Buddhism. They both focus on the objective of truth,
kindness and beauty and take it as their own responsibility to realize
a harmonious world. They also resembled greatly in some thoughts and behavior
such as “ teachers should set a good example for students”,
“treating students equally”, “build oneself good virtue
for both family and society” etc.
The vivid lecture arouse the attendants interests and finally leads to
a warmly discussion about Confucius and Sakyamuni Buddha as well as today’s
application of the giants’ thoughts and behaviors. This talk program
shortened the distance between Nepal and Chinese culture, and helped the
Faculties and students understand more about Confucius and Chinese culture.
