China Lies in East Asia on the western shore of the Pacific.
The beautiful country of 9.6 million square kilometers declines
from west to east. The geographical features is a result of
the orogenic movements. Tens of milliions of years ago the Indian
Plate and Eurasian Plate clashed and the joining part was pushed
upward to form the "roof of the world"---Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau where the world's highest peak, the Qomolangma soars
8,848.13 meters above sea level.
China has many mountains famous for their beautiful shapes.
Mount Tai has been worshipped
as the holiest mountain. Mount Hua is famous for its sheer cliffs.
Mount Song tells the earth's history of 4 billions years with
its clear-cut geological strata. Huangshan Mountains are said
to have all the beauty of the mountains in the world. The ancient
trees in the Shennongjia Mountains are shrouded in mist all
year round.
China also has many great rivers. The
Yangtze, the third longest in the world, is famous for its
Three Gorges. The Yellow River is called "Mother River"
by the Chinese. The upper reaches have many dangerous shoals.
When the Yellow River reaches Hukou in Shanxi, the river is
suddenly closed in by two peaks. Before Hukou the river is 400
meters wide. The currents squeeze through the narrow opening
and tumble down to form a thunderous waterfall of 20 meters
high.
The Huangguoshu Waterfalls in Guizhou Province, made up with
two dozen falls, are known as the "Number One Fall in Asia".
One of the falls can bellow when a mountain flood is coming
The Lijiang River and Fuchun River are favored by tourists
for their placid water and beautiful landscapes along them.
China has a coast line of 18,000 kilometers. Beidaihe, Yalong
Bay and "the Remotest Spot on Earth" on Hainan Island
are now much loved summer or winter resorts.
Among the many famous springs is Butterfly Spring in Dali,
Yunnan Provice. On April 25 every year, numerous butterflies
gather in a huge tree by the spring. They bite each other by
the tail to hand from the tree down to the water surface of
the spring. The Shy Spring in Guangyuan in Sichuan Province
will withdrasw its water when there is sound nearby, thus its
name"Shy". The Grescent Moon Spring at the foot of
Mingsha Hill in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, has existed for mroe
than 1,000 years despite the constant encroaching of the sand
dunes all round it.
