KATHMANDU, SEP 09 - Chinese educators have urged the Nepal government
to introduce Chinese as a foreign language in curricula. On the occasion
of the Chinese Teachers’ Day on Sunday, the Confucius Institute
at Kathmandu University (CIKU) sought the promotion of the Chinese language.
At a programme organised on the occasion, Zhang Shubin, Chinese director
at the CIKU, appreciated the interest shown by Nepalis in learning the
Chinese language. “Since many people in Nepal have shown their interest
to learn Chinese, we need to promote it. As immediate neighbours, it would
be very useful for Nepalis to learn Chinese,” said Zhang, reminding
that countries like India, USA, Britain and Australia have included Chinese
language in their curricula.
At the programme, Secretary at the Ministry of Education Suresh Man Shrestha
said that learning Chinese could benefit Nepalis. “Nepal-China relations
date long back. And language can be a good medium to exchange cultures
between these two countries,” said Shrestha. “China is a booming
economy and learning Chinese can enhance the Nepali economy too.”
